August 2008, Lisbon, Portugal

While walking in the street of Lisbon, I came across an old church, that church was amazing but I won’t say too much about it as I will post a photo of it tomorrow. If I happened to go to a church I really like the lights produced by those candles. As those candles are for remembering the dead, it could therefore be seen as something sad but I see that as something beautiful and of a nice gesture instead. Hence why I like to take photos of them…

August 2008, Lisbon, Portugal

While walking up the hill to enter the castle I noticed the moon was still visible in the sky. It was a very sunny day, with a perfect blue sky (is it always like this in Portugal!?) and I already liked the color difference between the trees and the sky, the moon was just a bonus :o )

I used my 300mm lens and the difficulty here really was to get the focus right… With autofocus it was hard to focus on the moon because I wanted it so close to the trees, but using manual focus was almost impossible because the moon was too small and I couldn’t see the details in my viewfinder. In the end I used autofocus and it worked just fine!

August 2008, Lisbon, Portugal

There is a very old and tall elevator in the center of Lisbon. More of a tourist attraction than anything else really. As I went to the top of that elevator I had to take a few stairs to go down and everyone was taking photos from that stair case of the view of the city. I was getting a bit annoyed with all those people, one after the other taking photos and stopping people to go down…

Except that… once I was on those stairs, I wanted to take a photo as well!!! :o )

But not of the city view, of the stair case itself! I just liked the curved lines and the fact that everything on that photo draws attention to its center. The color of the stair case was light brown, nothing special, and I therefore decided to shoot in black and white to give a more “vintage” feel.

Happy Familly

June 2008, London, UK

There is an attraction in central London called the “London dungeon” or something like that anyway! It is suppose to be some kind of house of horror. On that day they were promoting this venue and had some people dressed up in those giant monster costume giving leaflet away. As I was taking some photos away of those monster I noticed the billboard in the background. I liked the contrast between the monster and the happy family walking towards you in the background.

What was difficult was to be able to have the right exposure… either I could see the billboard with a black monster in front… or I could see a detailed monster and a white billboard!

This photo was the best compromised…

Dangerous London

June 2008, London, UK

As I was walking in the street of London looking around for photo opportunity I almost tripped into that ditch!!! you could almost not see it! for a country which is such health and safety paranoid as england that’s quite surprising they have this thing in the middle of a pedestrian walkway and no warning…

Anyway.. after almost tripping over it, I decided to take a photo of it… so it wasn’t too bad! at least it made me notify this thing on the ground :)

I wanted to use the different lines to great a sense of perspective, I did take a few shots where all you can see is the pavement and the water stream in the middle, but the perspective work best with some kind of “normal” surrounding. Also, I liked the fact there were some perpendicular lines with the tree and building’s columns.

Different fields of racing

May 2008, Brands Hatch, London, UK

Those cars are fast and make a lot of noise!!! A friend was actually racing there, he was in the white BMW you can just about to see in the background.

Watching UFC is probably not for everyone… That moment is when the english champion won his fight. I wanted to capture the madness and in some sense the savageness of the crowd. I am not judging here, as I was probably like them at some point! ;)

Blakc and Yellow

June 2008, Bangalore, India

India’s countryside near Bangalore is gorgeous. Especially the very deep colors of green and yellow. I tried to accentuate those colors by framing the photo with a black shadow.

Tree carving macro

June 2008, Bangalore, India

While walking in a rather boring bird reserve in India… boring because there wasn’t much birds to see… I noticed this tree. Now what was funny to me is that I randomly met an old lady in a train a while ago who predicted to me I would fall in love this august with a woman with a name starting with an “F”. My name starts with an S… so I thought this was funny… plus… I always like playing with macro/depth of Field! ;)

Begging and passing by

June 2008, Bangalore, India

This may not be my best photo in terms of composition, it is still one of my favorite because of the stance and face of the poor old man. As I was taking this photo from a moving car I had a) very little time to see what was coming and b) very little time to take the photo itself.

I managed to take 3 shots, one of them the girl is in front of the man… and the other one the frame is all wrong. This is the only one left. The tyre still contribute in my eyes to frame the photo somewhat. But what is more important to me in that photo is the message of that old man begging… and that young person waking pass not even looking at him…
