June 2008 – India, Bangalore
There is a low risk of Malaria in Bangalore, in the hotel I was staying at they had a peculiar way of making sure no mosquitoes would disturb their guests… At 6pm each evening, a guy was going around the little park outside the bar and vaporise huge amount of pesticide… sure, the mosquito were not annoying any guests after that (well.. actually… later in the night there were some!) but I wonder what is worse… getting killed by chemical or enduring a bite or two!! ;)

June 008 – India, Bangalore
This photo was taken from the hotel I was staying at. I stayed there for 2 weeks for work and every night I was in what they called the “polo club”, the hotel bar. I was sitting in a corner where I could get a power adapter (Macbook pro are great, except for the lame, VERY lame battery!) and I was processing my 100s of photos each night that way! I wonder if you can recognise my then background picture as I blogged about it on this blog! :o)

While taking this photo I played with the lines of the power lines/telephone lines and took the photo such as the tarmac has the same width on the left and on the right of the photo to play a bit with the perspective… I also wanted to capture the car with the motorbike in front as the woman is standing as if she was ridding an old gladiator horse carriage chasing that poor man… yes, I see too much in my photos!!! ;o)

India is quite astonishing when you look at the road traffic… what I liked on that photo is the fact you can see a typical bike… where you have a 2 adults and 2 children on it! You can’t really see on that photo but the woman is holding a small baby in her arms. As well as the typical bike you have the cow… there are a lot of cow on the roads, and this familly just dodge one. I also liked how the dropplets of water seem to give an effect of motion to that photo.

You see those women cleaning the street a lot in Bangalore, this photo was taken very early in the morning when there wasn’t much traffic and the sun was coming up.

Driving back from work to the hotel by car is always source to a lot of interesting things in India/Bangalore. I already published a shot of a similar sunset few weeks ago. But I also liked that shot as I played with the lines of the Electric lines to create some dynamism in that photo.

I was playing with my camera, trying to catch motorcycle driving at different speed as a few days earlier I took a photo with my small compact camera of 3 different bikes going at different speed, only one was in focus (the one I was chasing) and it created some kind of parallax with different blurry effect… I liked that… but this photo is not about that ;)
I liked that other photo but because it was taken from a small compact camera and the framing wasn’t perfect I tried to reproduce that effect with my main camera for about a week… no success… I did however take this photo while trying to play with the shutter speed and the speed of the car… I still like the effect on the wall and the contrast with the different colors!

Leaving Bangalore for London I had to catch a fairly early flight leaving at 7am… I am usually so tired that I sleep through the take off…. this time I decided to watch through the window and saw that sight…

Bangalore is a fast growing city, they are building a highway from its center to the IT Hub just outside the city called Electronic city. To do this, they have to make some room for the new, larger road. But everything has a use in India, if you only have to destroy half a house to make some room, then you do so and use the remaining half of the house! on the way to electronic city you can spot many of those half finished/destroyed house!

I went back to Bangalore/India for 1 month this year. As usual I took the oportunity of the 1h to 2h taxi ride to the office from the hotel to take lot of photos. As I knew I should expect many interesting photos at any corner of the way I was ready… I noticed this girl while my car slowed down near a traffic junction, I only had time to take 3 shots… somehow this is my favorite because of the expression on the child face and where she is looking at… I also think the color contrast well with her clothes and skins. I decided to keep the left part of the photo as it shows some kind of garbage and emphise the notion of poverty… I was tempted to only keep the blue background, but decided to leave this photo untouched.
