May 2011 – UK, Dungeness
I liked the patchwork of color of that container door, it almost looks like a painting. Well, technically it has been painted so it could be a painting :)
I took a few shots and was tempted to crop the hinges out of the photo, but decided to leave them in as although you cannot be mistaken to what this is, some doors, it kind of anchor the frame to its content. Well, that what I thought when cropping the photo like this anyway!

May 2011 – UK, Dungeness
Dungeness is a strange place and this was my first shot on the second time I visited that place. Old boats and other stuff are left to rust, fishnets are scatered on the pebble beach.

May 2011 – UK, Dungeness
Somehow I really like that photo, it has nothing special, yet it speaks to me. As I was walking on the dungeness beach I was attracted by that black box, I liked how it looked like a black hole with a tiny window of light at the bottom of it, almost like a tunnel. I walked close by and tryed different angle, but the close shot where actually not working for me… something was just missing. I took a few step back and took that shot… and haven’t changed a thing. You can see the nuclear station in the background, with the power lines and the few houses on that beach… and you can see debris scattered around… and then that container which could look like an old abandonned shop which is all black. For me, something does not quite fit, it looks strange. That shot is expresses exactly what I felt as I walked on that beach and saw that container. And that’s the reason why I like this photo.

May 2011 – UK, Dungeness
You can find all sort of things on the beach of Dungeness, such as a very old door washed away on the shore. I found the photo to have dull color so I coverted it to black and white and saturated the contrast.

November 2010 – Seychelles
What I liked with this bark is that it works like a cloud, you can see many things if you look at it long enough… a face? a cat? As I was taking this photo I was being told to STOP TAKING SO MANY PHOTOS, IT IS JUST A PIECE OF WOOD and start enjoying the beach! Well, it isn’t just a piece of wood… and I did enjoy the beach eventually :)

I liked the symbol of that champagne cork, laying on the beach with the sunset going down. I dont usually like composition shot, that cork was already there but I must admit I did turn the logo of the cork in the right way.

November 2010, Seychelles
After an amazing treck through the jungle which was much more difficult than what the guide initially told us, but also much more fun we all ended up on a beautiful private beach, unspoiled and with all sorts of natural debris on it. This was actually part of a tree which was on the beach and had die. As you may have noticed in previous photos, I love to play with “lines” in my photos, and this old tree was full of beautiful lines :)

November 2010, Seychelles
It was very low tide and I was walking quite far out in the sea with water at my ankles. When I noticed the bird I rushed to change my lens to the big 300mm one… while walking in the sea, which made me somewhat nervous!
I was concerned the bird was going to fly away… I was walking very slowly towards him, thinking it would by my last shot at each step I was taking… Well… why rushing?! I managed to get so close I had to stop otherwise I would have to change my lens back again. The bird did not care about me at all! it was even slightly annoying because I wanted to take it flying off… I waited a bit… made some noise… but no, that bird was happy walking around!

This was another remote and lost beach which had lot of old trees, I enjoyed playing with the perspective with this photo. I could never really get the photo right at the beginning and the difficulty was to frame it in such a way that it almost provides a 3D effect, while giving it a sense of movement with the trunk coming from afar, then under the sand and finally right at you. I also wanted to only get 3/4 of the photo with white sand and still be able to see some details in the top of the photo in the background so it adds to the general movement of the photo I just mentioned. What was tricky was to get the light balance right. I did not have to crop the photo and all I did in post processing was to lighten the overall photo a little. What I like the most with playing with the depth of field is just that, to give a sense of movement and 3D, in the real world if you were to focus on that trunk the background would be blurry and this is what I tried to reproduce.

October 2008 – Varkala, India
There are a lot of wild dogs in India. This one was a mother and was watching its 2 little dogs playing further along the beach. I just liked how “cricked” that dog was… almost like a caricature!

October 2007 – Dungeness, UK
On an afternoon in the Weirdest place in South East England it was all gloom and doom… the perfect weather to capture the atmosphere of this strange place! Those 2 boats looked like they had not been used in quite some time! I liked the contrast the grey sky was making that afternoon with all the dots made by the beach pebbles. I played with the composition in this photo with the different boats in the depth of field… there are actually 3 boats.

This photos is part of a series I took that day on that beach. I like the texture of those oursins when taken in such close up!
