I took a photo of those boats probably 5 or 6 years ago, and they are still there looking great!
The fact they are so old and their paints fading away help softening the photo and blend those boats to the surrounding landscape.

At the end of Derek Jarman garden in Dungeness you have what looks like is reminiscent of a Japanese Garden. In fact on that pebble beach it is quite difficult to see and I could have easily walked on it. As it is very fragile it also shows someone is maintaining that garden…

As I walked on the beach of Dungeness I saw that feather, stuck in the pebbles… it looked strange and I wondered how it got there… could it have arrived there naturally? or could it be that another photograph (and there are plenty coming to this beach!) put it there to compose a shot. I don’t like to compose shots, I like to photograph things as they are, so I find it funny if this was placed by someone else… some kind of recycled photo scene… and not against my principles as I did not place that feather there myself, nor ask someone to do it. From a technical point it was actually quite tricky, I wanted to get the feather in focus and the green vegetation blurred as they were being battered by the wind. I could not see what I was focusing on and it took me a good 10 or 15 shots to get that one. What is even better is that I didn’t even have to crop anything! :)

I liked how those fishnet cords looked like worms giving almost an organic feel to the photo. Moment before I took the shot the sun made a brief apparition, but one does not complain of cloudy day in Dungeness, the palce does not need sun to look weirdly stunning :)

Some old train tracks which were coming and leading to nowhere! I prefered this black and whit versino to the colored version as I think it intesify the old aspect of the tracks. I played with the depth of field so although only the front is in focus the back blends in nicely.

I liked the patchwork of color of that container door, it almost looks like a painting. Well, technically it has been painted so it could be a painting :)
I took a few shots and was tempted to crop the hinges out of the photo, but decided to leave them in as although you cannot be mistaken to what this is, some doors, it kind of anchor the frame to its content. Well, that what I thought when cropping the photo like this anyway!

Dungeness is a strange place and this was my first shot on the second time I visited that place. Old boats and other stuff are left to rust, fishnets are scatered on the pebble beach.

THis is part of a small old house in Dungeness. It is acutally a window which has been condemned, the red walls make a great “natural” frame.

Somehow I really like that photo, it has nothing special, yet it speaks to me. As I was walking on the dungeness beach I was attracted by that black box, I liked how it looked like a black hole with a tiny window of light at the bottom of it, almost like a tunnel. I walked close by and tryed different angle, but the close shot where actually not working for me… something was just missing. I took a few step back and took that shot… and haven’t changed a thing. You can see the nuclear station in the background, with the power lines and the few houses on that beach… and you can see debris scattered around… and then that container which could look like an old abandonned shop which is all black. For me, something does not quite fit, it looks strange. That shot is expresses exactly what I felt as I walked on that beach and saw that container. And that’s the reason why I like this photo.

You can find all sort of things on the beach of Dungeness, such as a very old door washed away on the shore. I found the photo to have dull color so I coverted it to black and white and saturated the contrast.

This is an artefact in the garden of the famous house of late artist and film director Derek Jaman. It has a very weird garden full of sculpture made of stuff he found on the beach. This was one of them. Using the widest possible apperture I had available I wanted to only focus on part of the stone. As the pattern on the stone is not well defined it looks as if most of the photo has been painted. What I like about that photo is the first reaction one whould have… what is it?? well, as you asked, it is a stone on a stick in a crasy garden on a very weird beach.

October 2007 – Dungeness, UK
On an afternoon in the Weirdest place in South East England it was all gloom and doom… the perfect weather to capture the atmosphere of this strange place! Those 2 boats looked like they had not been used in quite some time! I liked the contrast the grey sky was making that afternoon with all the dots made by the beach pebbles. I played with the composition in this photo with the different boats in the depth of field… there are actually 3 boats.
